[{"text":"Hey again everyone! Earlier this week we were fortunate enough to provide over ten of you with a promo Black Lightning MC for participating in some of our DCDB content. For anyone that missed out on one, the requirements were very lenient and we encourage everyone to participate in DCDB with us; who knows, maybe next time you'll win something?!

This week I want to talk to you about one of the most confusing cards in DCDB. Luckily, this one is a SuperVillain, so he doesn't come up to often. However, when he does there is inevitably a judge call..."},{"header":"the problem"},{"image":[{"src":"haw230198hawkman-.jpeg"},{"caption":""}]},{"text":"Hawkman's play ability is great. Get some Power and gain two VP; what's not to love?! It's his FAA that causes all the confusion. What exactly does 5 Power worth of cards mean? At first glance, its easy."},{"double":[{"src":"ima77427image-se.jpeg"},{"src":"ima488102image-se.jpeg"}]},{"text":"Punches are worth 1 Power, Vuln's aren't worth any. Piece of cake."},{"double":[{"src":"ima371749image-se.jpeg"},{"src":"ima403948image-se.jpeg"}]},{"text":"Kicks are worth 2 Power, Weaknesses aren't worth any. Moving on..."},{"double":[{"src":"ani727870animal-m.jpeg"},{"src":"cro19362crown-of.jpeg"}]},{"text":"Ok, starting to get to some interesting cards. Cards of this genre reference cards you've played "this turn". Since FAA attacks happen between turns, these will provide no Power when discarded to Hawkman's FAA. So far so good."},{"double":[{"src":"cyb66166cybernet.jpeg"},{"src":"man31071man-bat-.jpeg"}]},{"text":"Cyber Enhancement and the Serum are interesting in that they look at game information in order to determine how much Power they are worth, rather than having a set value printed on the card. Although this is the case, the cards are not considered to have been played to determine their value."},{"double":[{"src":"aqu353409aqualad-.jpeg"},{"src":"bla603427blaster-.jpeg"}]},{"text":"Aqualad will look to see if you control a Super Power (perhaps Force Field, etc), and if so then it will count for the full four Power; if not then it will count for two. Same case for Blaster, if you have an Ongoing Equipment (i.e. Computer Console, etc) then it'll count for three Power, otherwise its a single Power towards Hawkman's FAA."},{"double":[{"src":"bir833544birdaran.jpeg"},{"src":"pan419257pandora-.jpeg"}]},{"text":"Because you are not playing the cards, you don't perform any actions based on the card's text. This means Birdarangs counts for a single Power and Pandora will count for Power depending on the Line-Up, but you will not add a card to the Line-Up when discarding her to the FAA."},{"double":[{"src":"bag789792bag-of-t.jpeg"},{"src":"bum510917bumblebe.jpeg"}]},{"text":"Again, we're not playing either of the cards, so we can't take any actions related to their abilities. That means no paying VP for Power via Bag of Tricks, and no ability to discard Bumblebee for its 1 Power. Cards with these types of abilities provide zero Power towards Hawkman's FAA."},{"double":[{"src":"daw967373dawnstar.jpeg"},{"src":"red995177red-lant.jpeg"}]},{"text":"A little more clarification here: since no player can take any actions due to his FAA, both Dawnstar and Red Lantern Power Ring will contribute zero power towards it."},{"double":[{"src":"ama75943amanda-w.jpeg"},{"src":"bat567800batmobil.jpeg"}]},{"text":"Here are some confusing cases for Hawkman's FAA. Cards which have some type of if-then decision tree. In this case, player's are required to go with the 'if you choose not to' \/ 'otherwise' decision, yielded the Power provided for that option."},{"double":[{"src":"cry549518crystal-.jpeg"},{"src":"lig605998lightnin.jpeg"}]},{"text":"Here's a tricky genre of cards. Cards that refer to generating Power during a turn will contribute zero power to Hawkman's FAA, because FAA attacks take place outside of any players turn."},{"double":[{"src":"ind587412indigo-t.jpeg"},{"src":"met858900metron-n.jpeg"}]},{"text":"This is another interesting group of cards. Anything that references your current Power, or Power of another card played this turn will contribute zero Power towards the FAA. For indigo ring, this is because its nobody's turn, for Metron its because you aren't actually generating Power when discarding the cards, so there is no power to generate."},{"double":[{"src":"sta929438starman-.jpeg"},{"src":"blu741227blue-car.jpg"}]},{"text":"A rather unique style of cards is one which generates Power based off a player's choice. Player's are not allowed to make a decision of this nature during the FAA attack, so the card contributes zero Power to the FAA."},{"header":"silver lining"},{"double":[{"src":"bla353107black-ma.jpeg"},{"src":"blu99235blue-car.jpg"}]},{"text":"Fortunately, all hope is not lost. Black Mask will handily net you a VP for your troubles when Hawkman decides to make an appearance!"},{"header":"recap"},{"text":"Hopefully this has given you a deeper understanding of the rules, and provided some insight into the decision making that goes into rulings. Cards of this nature make the job of creating a rules structure for the game difficult, but in all cases we do our best not to have to ban any card just because the rules are to complex. Occasionally that happens, and perhaps Hawkman will have the ban hammer dropped on him at some point.

When cards are routinely causing as many headaches as he does, we find it to have a negative impact on the game, and players often feel tricked by the way a card was worded. If nothing else, remember that the most subtle words in a text box are often the most important!"},{"header":"Parting thoughts"},{"text":"Until next time, I leave you with the entirety of the Hawkman [SV] rules text, for your reading pleasure:

Hawkman (Crossover 5)
- His First Appearance Attack refers to power generated by the discarded card effect(s). If a discarded card's text is similar to 'you may do X, if you choose not to, +Y Power', players are assumed to have chosen the alternative which provides Y Power. If a discarded card's text is similar to 'you may do X, otherwise, +Y Power', players are assumed to have chosen the alternative which provides Y Power. If you must make any other decision, then the player cannot, and that effect will count as zero Power.
- FAA Ex: If you discard Man-Bat Serum [Equipment] then you get +Power equal to your VP.
- FAA Ex: If you discard Hawkgirl [Hero] then you get power equal to 1 + the number of Heroes in your discard pile.
- FAA Ex: If you discard Birdarangs [Equipment] then you get +1 Power (you do not draw a card).
- FAA Ex: If you discard Amanda Waller [Hero] you get +2 Power.
- FAA Ex: If you discard Pandora [Hero] do not add a card to the Line-Up, but you do get +1 Power for each different cost in the Line-Up.
- FAA Ex: If you discard Dawnstar [Hero] you get +0 Power, because no player can perform an action.
- FAA Ex: If you discard Starman [Hero] you get +0 Power, because you cannot make a decision.
"}]
